These sit alongside more specialist finance tools. For accounts payable, automated invoice capture tools remove the need to manually key supplier invoices, matching them to purchase orders and pushing them through an approval workflow. For reporting, dedicated financial reporting platforms connect directly to your accounting system and produce management information without anyone touching a spreadsheet. For reconciliation and repetitive posting work, digital workers are software robots that handle tasks like bank reconciliation and journal entries around the clock. Most modern accounting systems, including Xero, Sage, and iplicit, are also building AI features directly into their platforms. The tools available today are genuinely impressive. The key is understanding which processes are draining your team first. Get that right and the right tools become obvious.

You can see who approved what, when it was processed, and what the original data looked like before any transformation. Role-based access controls sit alongside this so that approval and override permissions are held at the right level. AP clerks can input and query. Your FC or FD holds override and exception approval. This creates a governance structure that is often more robust than a purely manual process. The right question to ask any vendor is whether their audit trail will satisfy your external auditors and any regulatory requirements specific to your sector. Verify this before implementation, not after.

Measure what existed before and what changes after. Baseline your current position first, otherwise you have nothing to compare against. Ask vendors directly: where is our data stored, who can access it, and how is it encrypted in transit and at rest. General-purpose AI tools like Claude, ChatGPT, and Copilot all offer enterprise tiers with stronger data controls and privacy guarantees than their standard versions. If your team is using any AI tool for sensitive financial data, the enterprise version is the right starting point. Your IT or information security function should be part of any finance AI procurement decision.

The most valuable thing any finance professional can develop right now is the ability to think in processes. Understanding how work flows through a finance function, where the bottlenecks sit, and what could be done differently is the foundation for working effectively alongside AI. Data literacy matters enormously too. Not coding or technical skills, but the ability to interrogate data, ask the right questions, and challenge outputs that do not look right. The professionals who will thrive are those moving toward a Finance Business Partner model, translating accurate financial information into commercial insight for decision-makers. That requires judgement, communication, and context. Those are human skills that AI supports but cannot replace.

Some of the tasks that entry-level finance staff do today will be automated. Invoice processing, bank reconciliation, basic data entry are exactly the kinds of tasks that digital workers handle well. What this means in practice is that junior roles are evolving rather than disappearing. The businesses that approach this well will use automation to free their junior team members from transactional work and give them exposure to analysis, reporting, and commercial involvement earlier in their careers. That is a significant opportunity for ambitious finance professionals. The roles that will thrive are the ones that develop broader skills alongside the technical grounding. Start building those skills now and the changes ahead become an advantage rather than a threat.

That is precisely the point. The finance professionals I work with are often spending 60 to 70 per cent of their time on work that produces no insight. They get redirected toward the work that actually matters. Both, and the change in type is the more important shift. Volume of transactions does not decrease. Reporting demands do not decrease. If anything, finance functions are being asked to do more with the same headcount. What AI and automation change is which tasks require human attention.
